A Divorced, Depressed Woman Drinks Hazardously, Gets Alcohol Therapy, and Experiences a Positive Attitude, Success, Self Esteem, and Personal Happiness in Life

Wendy was the mother of four children. Wendy had been feeling quite stressed out lately and started to “medicate” herself by having several glasses of wine each night after she put her children to bed. After about eleven months of this drinking routine, she eventually comprehended the fact that rather than helping her “relax” and muddle through her difficulties, drinking made her feel less tranquil when she awakened. This, in turn, made her feel even more stressed all through the day.

After thinking about her situation for a few days, Wendy made up her mind to talk about her drinking situation with her best friend. Nine days later she eventually got to meet the doctor her best friend had talked about. After their brief introduction, Wendy told the psychiatrist that ever since her ex-husband and she got divorced, she has been having a difficult time financially, psychologically, and spiritually.

At times, she felt that she was totally over the divorce. Recently, though, she has been feeling extremely depressed about the fact that she and her former husband couldn’t “make it”. When asked by the doctor how long she and her ex-husband went together before they got married, Wendy explained to the psychiatrist that Robert, her ex-husband, and she dated for five years and then lived together for two years before they got married.

As Wendy was talking to the doctor, she underlined the point that she honestly thought that they waited long enough to know one another well enough before they got married. After the children started to arrive, to the contrary, their relationship appeared to worsen. To make matters worse, both Robert and she began to drink, and their unhealthy and abusive drinking adversely affected their relationship, their finances, and their love for one another.

When things became less than pleasant between them, Robert got a divorce attorney and filed for a divorce. Even though things were clearly not going well and even though she was regularly depressed, Wendy told the psychiatrist that she did not want to put an end to their marriage. Once she received the divorce papers, however, she knew that their marriage was over.

The doctor explained to Wendy that the anxiety, tension, and stress that she has been going through concerning her careless and hazardous drinking are some of the common alcohol abuse effects and that the best solution for this state of affairs is rehabilitation for one’s alcohol abuse. It was clear that Wendy had come a long way. In fact, just about nine months after she stopped her treatment, Wendy had finally laid the depressing feelings of her former husband to rest and was beginning to feel better about herself and more spiritually “sound” and psychologically together than she had ever felt in her life. Additionally, she was starting to discover how to find personal happiness, self esteem, a positive attitude, and success in life.
