What is Manic Depression?
Bi-Polar disorder is another moniker for manic depression. When an individuals mood swings are very irregular with sudden changes from good to bad this is commonly associated with being Bi-Polar. Depression has many forms. This is one of them. Manic depression is not the same as just being sad or upset for over something in particular. Manic depression is more serious than that. Bi-polar is just another stage of the general disease depression. Manic depression is diagnosed in millions of cases each year in America. Typically, some type of depression yearly affects around 17 million Americans.
Unfortunately only about1/3 of those will be diagnosed and receive help. Nothing can be cured if the victim doesn’t go for help. Many Americans are hesitant to confront a disease that is categorized as a mental illness. Being crazy isn’t something people want associated with themselves. Brain diseases are generally quite complex. When diagnosed there is a stigma that isn’t easy to handle. However, as with any form of depression, the affliction does not make you less a person. You’re not crazy. It means you have an illness like any other. Now that it’s found, the process of treatment can start.
Medicine is still looking for all the causes of depression. There are many factors that bring on depression. It’s well known that consideration must be given to chemical factors, a person’s surroundings, and even their genes. A chemical imbalance in the brain helps cause it. Depression is also brought about by stress. Life is full of stress. It can be problems at work, in our relationships with those we love or facing the reality of trying to survive week to week. Depression does not play favorites. It’s a disease for rich people and for poor people. It doesn’t care about race. No racial group is less likely to contract this disease.
The symptoms for all forms of depression are quite similar. Dramatic shifts in personality and up and down mood swings are some. Insomnia is another symptom for depression. The feeling of helplessness, hopelessness and Desperation. When your ability to function properly at work and at play becomes ever apparent then the possibility of depression is real. There is hope for depression sufferers. You can find help. Doctors can administer drugs or herbal remedies to treat it. There are also medical professionals that can help your illness through ‘talk therapy’”. Support groups can also be helpful for those with manic depression. Look for assistance first.
